Hope this can help you guys. This tutorial is for PCs, in which you have already installed Windows 7 and want it to become the default OS of your PC, even after installing Win 8 in it. Except some sections, requiring high precision, the process to dual boot Windows 8 & Windows 7 is easy.

Step One

We are actually installing Windows 8 in an extra disk partition. Therefore, first, you have to create a new partition in Win 7. You can make use of the Disk Management tool to make new partition. First, open disk management through following steps.

  1. Go to Start Menu
  2. Type ‘diskmgmt.msc’ and hit Enter button.

Step Two

Now, you are in Disk Management section. Find out the hard drive partition, where you have installed Windows 7. Right click on the partition and click on option ‘Shrink Volume’. Keep in mind that the process is not possible if your hard drive is striving for free space. Type the amount of space you want to shrink and click okay.

As the minimum space required for installing Windows 8 is 20GB, you should give more than that. Once you have done shrinking right, you can see some allocated space in your disk management.

Now, we can move to the installation section of Windows 8. For doing that, insert your DVD or plug-in the USB, where you have installed Windows 8 using some USB Installation tools.

Step Four

On the screen, you can see two options: Upgrade and Custom Install. Unless you want to upgrade your entire PC to Windows 8, you should choose the custom installation option. Then, you can find a list of disk partitions. From the list, you should select that ‘unallocated’ labelled partition.

Wait some minutes to install Windows 8 in your PC. In seconds, your system will boot up in new version of OS, showing an OS selection menu. You can now select the appropriate OS and start working.
