WinRar is a very popular archiver – software which is used to compress files, to reduce the space it takes. Perhaps the most known archiver and archive extension is ZIP, however WinRar provides much better compression, which is the first thing to consider when choosing your archiver. That said, WinRar for PC is shareware, which means you can use it for free only for the first 40 days of the trial period, and you have to buy it afterwards (however WinRar for Android is completely free). Moreover, you don’t need WinRar to unpack .rar files – a lot of free software can do this for you. Also, some other free archivers have comparable compression ratio and speed as WinRar. One such software we can highly recommend is 7-Zip.
If you do want to use WinRar software, we urge you to only use the official website to download it. Unfortunately, many websites try to capitalize on WinRar success by providing WinRar downloads which they bundle with different adware or even viruses! And they do this even for trial versions! The latest versions of WinRar (starting from WinRar 5) have introduced a new file format known as RAR5. This new file format, although has the same extension .rar, is not recognized by the previous WinRar versions, so always make sure you have the latest version of WinRar download.
Files protection. You can specify your password when compressing the files, so only the person who knows the password will be able to open your archive. A 256-bit AES encryption algorithm is used to protect rar archives, so you can be sure that nobody can break your password other than Brute Forcing all possible passwords. Make sure your passwords are long and hard enough (no simple words or word combinations!).
Self-extracting archives. A very convenient feature, which lets you create self-extracting archive, so the person extracting your files doesn’t have to have any archiver software – just run archive executable file and it will unpack itself.
15 formats supported. WinRar can create archive in RAR or ZIP format, but it can open or extract most known archive formats: RAR, ZIP, 7-Zip, ACE, ARJ, BZ2, CAB, GZip, ISO, JAR, LHZ, TAR, UUE, XZ and Z.
